"Wheelbase" was a BBC television series about cars broadcast on BBC2 between 1964 and 1975. Amongst its presenters were Gordon Wilkins between 1964 and 1973 and Cliff Michelmore. The show was the predecessor of Top Gear. "Wheelbase" was amongst the first programmes in the UK to be shown in colour during BBC2's "colour launching period".
"Wheelbase"'s coverage of Formula One motor racing in the late 1960's was repeated on UK satellite channel ESPN Classic. The programmes were transmitted largely as originally broadcast, but with occasional captions to put period commentary into context.
Presented by Gordon Wilkins and Barrie Gill who report from the final Grand Prix of the 1969 season in Mexico. With the Drivers Championship already won by the "Flying Scot" Jackie Stewart the talk from the track prior to the race concerns the drivers themselves and the talk surrounding their upcoming futures. "Wheelbase" attempts to discover fact from fiction and give the latest news as to which team each driver will be driving for in the 1970 season. As to the minor matter of Mexican Grand Prix Jack Brabham starts in pole position. Interviews from including Jackie Stewart, Colin Chapman, Bruce McClaren, Denny Hulme, Jacky Iycx and Joachan Rindt
